Kidnapped US tourists released

By Heba Saleh in Cairo

Two American tourists were released hours after they and their Egyptian guide were kidnapped in the tourist hub of south Sinai, one of the few places still receiving visitors despite the political turmoil raging elsewhere in the country.

Bedouin sources quoted by Reuters news agency said the kidnappers agreed to free the tourists in exchange for four fellow tribesmen held by police.

Good to hear. But next step down the stability ladder is that such Yemeni-style kidnappings turn into Mali/Niger-style kidnappings, i.e. that the kidnappers start reselling their cargo up the food chain to Jihadi political operators, also quite active in the Sinai.

Egypt really needs to get its act together quick.

(Also let me note that immediately caving to their demands isn't a good way to discourage further tourist kidnappings.)

Quite right. Thus I did not see this as "good news" for Egypt.
