Americans Smarter Than Canadians About Egypt?

I know that among you sophisticated international typesCanadians, among others, are supposed to be smarter than Us Dumbo ‘mericans. But this comment in an AP story on foreigners evacuating Egypt makes me wonder. I’ve deleted the individual’s name because I am not singling him out personally, especially as there are apparently 34 other Maple Leaferssimilarly, um, unperceptive. But is this an example of how out of touch expert resident expats are about Egypt?

"We did not see the protests coming. All of us have been surprised," said . . . the deputy head of the Canadian International School in Cairo, who left Egypt along with 34 of his colleagues

Now I don’t live or teach in no forrin’ land, nor am I a hoity and toity pointy-head International School deputy ackerdemmick type, and I also just been to that Egypt place for only a matter of days during an oodle of years ago, but I knows for a fact, like for at least two score years that that place was a time bomb. Downright overdue too. And even I knew that the demonstrations were scheduledpublicly on That Facebook Thing and that Twitter a week or more ago. Wasn't hard to hear them noisy neighbors uproad in Tunisia recently causin’ all kinds of similar uppity activity and all.

And at least some of our USA dumber media still know that Egypt has had demonstrations in progress that affect the whole Middle East, even if they are not exactly sure just where in the Middle East Egypt is.

Yeah, don't pay attention to Canadians who claim to be superior to Americans. We're the ones who were so righteous for not participating in a war we had a chance of winning, and decided to fight in the war no one ever won, instead.

There's a certain sort of ignorance and naivete that one sees among expat groups in many countries. It doesn't surprise me they were clueless. Many expats tend to live in an absolute bubble (literally in many cases - in gated compounds) in their host countries.

So the cluelessness is actually not surprising.
