But with respect to the Rice visit to the Maghreb
Although nothing remarkable, she did repeat the usual platitudes and as usual the terrorism optic was the main driver.. Certanly the Algerians will be annoyed that she mentioned the Western Sahara and a resolution on Rabat home territory, and the Moroccans sure to go on and on and on and on and on about that. On the other hand, the children are already playing about who got to see who, in this instance the Algerians making a big deal Rice did not see the Jet Skier en Chef. I wonder if the Algerian writer really believes the Jet Skier in Chief avoided rice over Saharan issues.... I am not sure which bunch are a bigger bunch of whankers.

If she said what she is reported to have said, and nothing more, I think there's reason to believe the rulers in Algiers will actually be rather pleased with her statements on the Sahara. Bush has been very explicit about wanting autonomy for WS as per the Moroccan plan. If Rice is now not willing to do more than allude to that plan as "some good ideas on the table", even when on Moroccan soil -- where repeating the president's line would be the ultimate crowdpleaser -- that may indeed be worth flagging.
By which I mean to say that I'm the biggest whanker on that particular subject, thank you very much.

Both Algiers and Rabat, and you, are likely reading much into nothing. Outgoing government with little real force, their only real interest is not seeing another little Mauretania or Tchad come into the world, hotbed of Al Qaeda, etc.
