Miss Arab World
Congratulations to Miss Bahrain who has just won the Miss Arab World beauty contest in Cairo.
It's wonderful to see how a modest glimpse of flesh can instantly bridge the East-West divide, as evidenced by the comment from Daily Mail reader Ken from Suffolk:
"So, behind the hijab's, niqab's and burqa's there are some very pretty ladies in the Arab world."
Purely for the research purposes of Aqoul's male readers, here are some of the other contestants (those whose monocles have already steamed up may click the images to enlarge):

I am sure many of our learned commentators will be able to draw significant political insight from this landmark event.

The only significance I draw is that these are some of the worst fashions I have seen in ages.

Very strange event.
Women don't come close to the "Miss country x" from the region who then participate in the global contests.
The "local dresses" are awful and the other outfits look like they've just snatched the women off the Ain Shams University cafeteria.
Thankfully, I live in Beirut.

actually, this competition was not a beauty pageant. it was more of the best Arab girl role model. The emphasis was on intellect, culture, service for country, etc.

I agree mate, the cut on "Miss X" was clearly third rate - bloody hell some of the Miss X Agri Whatever Festival in the back country are more fetching.
But leaving that aside, the local dresses AND the other outfits are really just plain awful. They look like bad Egyptian film [well, bad and Egyptian are redundant now...] customs. Cheap satin, etc.

In Hebrew, there's a name for these. Fre7a, plural, Fre7ot (with a 7a like in 7maar).
When Moroccan Jews emigrated en masse to Israel, many of them wanted to dress and act like the Ashkenazim. Many would die their hair to be "perfect" fake blondes, put tons of dripping make-up, dress like cheap, em, uneducated women. You get the picture. It's said that fre7a was a common first name among those women.
For some reason, Egyptians really seem to have fre7ot taste.
