MEMRI Again: Subtle distortions, lies, and videotape

Although I haven't the time for a long discussion, I think it worthy of discussion here Brian Whitaker's item on MEMRI's distortion on the Palestinian TV item.

Well, it's an agitprop operation. Works well, sadly.

You mean subtle?

Word order, of all the complaints to make about the accuracy of a translation? Even in English, word order isn’t necessarily set in stone, and any first-year foreign language student knows that even in languages like Spanish that are much closer to English than Arabic is, word order can be flexible depending on context. That’s just…bizarre.

Posted by: Eva Luna at May 16, 2007 01:32 PM

No, that's obfuscation to the ignorant pigs and dupes

Really a successful strategy, actually.

Posted by: The Lounsbury at May 16, 2007 01:48 PM

English sentences never end with a subject. So say I.

Posted by: matthew hogan at May 16, 2007 05:01 PM

Says you.

The objective of MEMRI is to expose Islamic extemism. So what?

"The overall effect of this is to change a conversation about resistance and sacrifice into a picture of unprovoked and seemingly motiveless aggression on the part of the Palestinians"

Eh? You guys can speak Arabic. If that video isn't an outrageous and murderous propaganda Islamic extemism, I don't know what is. And Whiteker is an apologist.

Posted by: shlemazl at May 26, 2007 01:15 PM

The objective of MEMRI is to expose Islamic extemism. So what?

No, the objective of MEMRI is to spread a funhouse mirror image of what dem Ayrabs think, by claiming to be a translation service dealing with representative opinion pieces. If they admitted that they're out to show the worst of the worst from the media all across the region, the craziest shit that is broadcast in over 20 countries, then fine: I'd look it up for the entertainment value. But that's not what they say.

(The mistranslations, in comparison, are a very, very minor problem, and I can't see the big fuss about it. Although it is a bit disturbing that they all seem to work the same way.)

That is usually how one tells the slant of a particular reporting org. Whenever a mistake is made, it always makes one particular side look bad.

Posted by: Klaus [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 27, 2007 05:59 AM

And Whiteker is an apologist.

Yes, for accuracy. Quaint concept that.

Posted by: The Lounsbury at May 27, 2007 08:30 AM

"The objective of MEMRI is to expose Islamic extemism. So what?"

Expose it? Apparently because no one ever heard of 9-11, Islamist violence, or religious fanaticism, etc. without MEMRI.

Posted by: matthew hogan at May 27, 2007 09:54 AM

Expose it? Apparently because no one ever heard of 9-11, Islamist violence, or religious fanaticism, etc. without MEMRI.

True, but we need to understand "why" and "how". Once you see with your own eyes little children being indoctrinated in this way and singing songs about "mommi leaving me expolosives as inheritance" and people telling you about the need to beat up wives "lightly" and holocaust denial and Islamic worldwide rule, you start to understand.

It's not just kitchen talk to be ignored; it's broadcast to millions on television. I hate to think what's going on in the kitchens.

Posted by: shlemazl at May 27, 2007 10:36 AM

Me: And Whiteker is an apologist.

Klaus: Yes, for accuracy. Quaint concept that.

No, for Islamists and anti-Semites.

The video is despicable whatever translation you are using. It talks about the objective of Islamic world domination, and about "Jews" in a rather negative light to put it mildly and it's a childrens' program.

Whiteker calls it "conversation about resistance and sacrifice"

Posted by: shlemazl at May 27, 2007 11:02 AM

Ah, an ideologue.

First, that was me, not Klaus my dear git.

Second, I repeat, for accuracy, whatever your nationalist slant (as in your idiotic response to Hogan).

Bandying anti-Semite about is a tiresome and tedious thing. Do it elsewhere.

Posted by: The Lounsbury at May 28, 2007 09:58 AM

My Dear Moonbat,

1. The program was anti-Semitic in line with the Oxfod dictionary defintion of the term and fully consistent with the best traditions of the Nazi Germany, whichever translation you are using.

2. I see you get "tired" rather quickly from anyone who does not agree. Ban me.

Posted by: shlemazl at May 28, 2007 05:32 PM

Ban me.

So melodramatic. Shlemazi, do you speak Arabic?

Posted by: Klaus [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 28, 2007 05:51 PM

So melodramatic. Shlemazi

Not at all. It's a response to "Do it elsewhere." Sure, you can ban me - it's your blog. However unless there is a formal statement banning me, I will do and say what I like.

do you speak Arabic?

No, but I have friends who are native Arab speakers who help me out. Why?

Posted by: shlemazl at May 28, 2007 06:06 PM

We don't ban here, ex truly outre behaviour. I think in several years it has happened a single time.

However, we do tell fools they are fools, and the like.

As for your opinions, I find them boring, second rate and typical North American Super 'Zionist' whanking. Evil Islamists, Apologists, etc etc. Boring.

It's not interesting, it's boring. Were I in a lull I might find myself inclined to argue, but since I am not, I merely will mock you, as that is what your whanking is worth to me.

Posted by: The Lounsbury at May 28, 2007 06:15 PM

Ho-ho-ho. You are SO funny. Keeping "mocking" me.

I see you have a love-hate relationship with American Zionists. You also have a love-hate relationship with humour and intellect.

Couple of things:

1. It's "wanking" rather than "whanking".

2. I am new to North America.

Posted by: shlemazl at May 28, 2007 08:22 PM

"Moonbat"?

Ban him.

Posted by: matthew hogan at May 28, 2007 09:50 PM

Matthew says:

"Moonbat"? Ban him

Sensitive are we? Calling me "git" etc... is obviously O'K.

Well, have I been banned yet? Wimps.

Posted by: shlemazl at May 28, 2007 10:49 PM

Sensitive? Nah. I just think "Moonbat" is a weirdo cult-word like "dhimmitude" and "idiotarian" and all other LGF-style cult verbal diarrhea.

"Look, the Islamoislams are going to turn Eurabia into a giant Islamofascisto moonbattery, where women will have to eat burkas for breakfast and we'll all be holocaust-denying dhimmis, and our daughters will have to wear anti-semitic burkas and swear allegiance to Hamas as dhimmitudinous incoherent yammer yada yada. -- Lizardoidously yours."

Like Julius Streicher only substitute Muslims for Jews. But perhaps alot more incoherent incomprehensible cult-jargon like moonbat.

Posted by: matthew hogan at May 28, 2007 11:25 PM

Go away, you bore me. You're not going to get banned, you're far too boring and run of the mill whanker to be 'banned.'

Posted by: The Lounsbury at May 29, 2007 04:48 AM

I only favor banning on grounds of lunacy, not abuse. We can make a case here. Very LGFy. :-)

Posted by: matthew hogan at May 29, 2007 12:07 PM

1. I do wonder where your feeling of intellectual superiority is coming from.

2. If you are going to use irrelevant insults, I suggest you learn how to spell them.

3. I see you have a love-hate relationship with LGF and "zionists". You also seem to have a love-hate relationship with commons sense, humour and intellect. Love your "mocking".

4. Why are you quoting what someone else said somewhere else about dhimmitude?

As I said, "go away" isn't going to work. I do what I like.

Your tolerance to opposing views is wanting, to put it mildly. Is that do with your culture or personality?

Posted by: shlemazl at May 29, 2007 12:34 PM

I note that 2 of my comments did not get published.

This blog was given to me as a tolerant and reasonable pro-Arab blog.

What a joke.

Posted by: shlemazl at May 29, 2007 06:16 PM

Of be more Classic Liberal mate. The boring gittish typical North American Actictivist Happens to be Conservo-'Zionist' Jewish Identity profile posting is merely boring.

I really question your true Liberal institincts. Severe and Nasty mockery in an open market is the solution mate, not regulation. Unfort. I lack the time for my classic informed nastiness and take down. And he's so boring.

Posted by: The Lounsbury at May 29, 2007 07:17 PM

Ah, but I am not serious, let him rant. I am not a pro-ban person. I am merely ridiculing his and their shtick as stupid and looney.

Christ, who is this moron?

Sadly, you were "censored" by a machine because you didn't enter the bloody passphrase and thus were relegated to the junk heap along with all the Russian porn/cheap drugs/penis enlargement comments.

Next time enter "cat" in the anti-spam field. It's only three goddamn letters.

Also, L is right. You're too retarded to be banned.

Posted by: eerie at May 29, 2007 08:16 PM

Ah, well, someone confusing his own incomptence in dealing with our staggeringly complex anti-spam procedure - three letter word and all that - with censorship.

Maybe we should ban you to protect yourself from further illustrating your personal moo-batnes.

Posted by: The Lounsbury at May 30, 2007 11:39 AM

Geniouses from AQOUL, think about it:

1. I have posed quite a number comments on your blog.

2. Just 2 of my latest comments did not go through.

Does it mean that I did not work out how your "complex anti-spam system" works? Don't think so. Automatic filter may have blocked messages because I tried to correct your unorthodox spelling of "whanking". It took ~2 days for you to publish them.

I do wonder why you consider yourselves SOOOO clever. Beats me, but I am glad it makes you happy.

Posted by: shlemazl at May 30, 2007 06:24 PM

"I do wonder why you consider yourselves SOOOO clever."

'cause we are.

Now don't go around ridiculing intelligence of others while wielding the moniker shlemazl.

Posted by: matthew hogan at May 30, 2007 06:45 PM

Did I say I was "ridiculing" your intelligence? You are making an assumption here.

No, I am gennuinely glad for you being so self-satisfied with your powerful brainpower which clearly places you head and shoulders above mere mortals, particularly "gits, shlemazls and boring North Americans".

Posted by: shlemazl at May 31, 2007 09:33 AM

Sorry, no. The junk status message indicated that you did not enter the passphrase. The reason it took 2 days to publish is because a human (i.e. me) noticed them in the junk pile while you were busy squealing about censorship.

Keep flailing though, it's quite funny.

Posted by: eerie at May 31, 2007 10:47 AM

Mate my mastabutory spelling of whanking, which pleases me in the sense of the word, has fuck all to do with you issues. But let me suggest a phrase to you: "negative benchmarking" - it may explain our pinheaded feeling of superiority over yourself.

Of course laziness might as well, but what can I say, I have day job.
