Next Year, Get Baked in Jerusalem?

One Israeli political party has announced that according to its interpretation of a rabbinical ruling, marijuana is not kosher for Passover, and so followers should abstain from its consumption during the upcoming holiday.

Apparently marijuana (and other products derived from the cannabis plant) fall into the category of kitniyot, foods that could be ground into flour, and thereby mistaken for forbidden grains and accidentally consumed during Passover by unsuspecting observant Jews.

However, the prohibition on consumption of kitniyot traditionally applies only to Ashkenazim - so all those freewheeling Sephardim are still free to light up.

If you violate the rule and consume marijuana, do you get stoned?

Dunno - I don't partake, myself. But you should be stoned for that pun.

(Actually, I have the kitniyot debate with Mom every year - it's not a Biblical prohibition per se, just a customary one. My argument is that there is no Eleventh Commandment that says, "Thou shalt follow the Atkins Diet." And my poor grandfather, whose birthday often fell during Passover - have you ever had a birthday cake made with matzo meal instead of flour? Repulsive!)

Oh come on, I thought I'd just leaven the discussion with a little humor, which apparently doesn't appeal to all those of the manna born.

Actually, re your Med basin cousins, make soup or other edibles, following the Maghrebine tradition.

Those of the manna born

Top marks for that!

Oddly that escapes me entirely. Perhaps my pronunciation is off such as to miss the overly subtle punditry.

You mean they do it with marijuana in general, or just on Passover? Because that would, of course, avoid the whole lung irritant issue (a primary reason I don't partake - I've never inhaled, directly anyway, but even indirectly it's by far my worst asthma trigger).

But it wouldn't fix the kashruth issue - kashruth requires avoiding ingesting foods that are not kosher for Passover at any point during Passover, not just avoiding ingesting them in the form of leavened bread. Thus the Ashkenazi prohibition on things like peanut butter or any alcoholic beverage made from grain. Highly observant households go so far as to dispose of all non-kosher for Passover items before the holiday begins, and then empty all kitchen cabinets and scrub every surface in the house to rid it of any trace of chametz. The truly hardcore kosher household has 4 sets of dishes: for meat, dairy, meat on Passover, and dairy on Passover.

Boy, am I glad I wasn't raised that way.

Yikes! You mean my wife's friend, who has two dishwashers - when I visited their house I asked why, and was told - is actually not nearly as strict as the most far out?

One needs to speak with Etonian intonation and have some knowledge of obscure BBC sitcoms to appreciate that one I'm afraid.

Ah.

Yes.

I did not even need the link, merely rereading.

See, I never liked sitcoms much and am of far too literal a mind to pick up most puns, unless pointed out to me.

"To the manner (manor) born" is Shakespeare not BBC-sticome (though a good series, I might add, despite the overuse of the word "Brabinger"), you vidiots!

Posted by: matthew hogan at April 2, 2007 07:38 AM

Should be "BBC-sitcom".
