New Month Open Thread
It's that time again. Per long-standing tradition, we give you, the Aqoul consumer, the opportunity to introduce yourselves, ask us questions, praise us lavishly, whinge on about random topics, or ignore us completely: the choice is yours.
Also, in keeping with our ongoing mission of lowering the on-line tone of discussion, I present: Lebanese noncombatants move to engage UN forces.

as far as peace keeping missions go, south Leb Land doesn't sound so bad!

Hi. I am a relatively new Aqoul reader and very excited about it, especially the articles on the Arab Gulf region. I am a PhD student from the US researching Indian expats in Dubai, the unique demographic and labor situation here, and the possibilities of belonging (or not belonging!) for the majority expat population. I'd be very happy to speak to anyone who lives in Dubai at the moment and can be contacted at nehavora1 at gmail dotcom. Thanks for the great site, and hope to become a regular here soon!

Welcome. I should think our very own Dubai Walla might be helpful if he were so inclined.

Also, secretdubai maintains a community for UAE bloggers that might yield some useful info.

She's already familiar with myself in particular, but also SecretDubai and that community. One of the many reasons I'm hoping she meets more people and can take into account their input is that she'd make a great guest author when she is ready to write more about her findings.

Thanks, dubaiwalla. You are the best!

Haha blue bikinis. I've never understood why some Lebanese have an Italian fetish.

why some Lebanese have an Italian fetish.
Gosh, that puts a whole new level of meaning into a conversational theme from a party the other night.

Any "news" on the non-combattants? That story requires an "update".

Booya! Trust a Brit to show integrity. Top general, no less.

and here is informed criticism (!) of the Lancet survey, the one with the 655,000 deaths, give or take 300,000. Nice little article.

I was prepared to summon the ghost of D-squared in response to the informed criticism, but it in fact seems to have some basis. And also, if you all of the critic's downward revisions, to leave you with a figure of 500,000 excess deaths, plus or minus.

Thanks, Klaus. The Lancet article (linked in our sidebar) seems to be causing a lot of partisan fuss. Sadly, haven't had time to study it myself.
